Breakaway Sign Post Systems
A telescoping square-post system typically combines a heavier 12-gauge perforated anchor post with a lighter 14-gauge square sign post. The 1¾-inch or 2-inch top post slides into the matching 2-inch or 2¼-inch anchor and is secured with approved connection hardware. When the installation is properly matched and assembled, the lighter top post and connection are intended to yield or separate during a vehicle impact instead of transferring the full force into a rigid foundation.
For concrete installations, a breakaway surface-mount sign post base provides a similar controlled connection above the pavement. Available configurations support U-channel posts, square posts and 2⅜-inch round posts while making a damaged post easier to remove and replace.
